NORTHBROOK, Ill., December 22, 2016 – It’s that time to set your New Year’s resolutions. The oldies, but goodies include getting fit and healthy, spending less and saving more, or making more time for family. Allstate is issuing a challenge for a different kind of New Year’s resolution; one that is focused on keeping families prepared and safe just in case a natural disaster strikes. And your disaster preparation plan could be a winner! Show us your plan via social media and be entered into a random drawing to win cool, tech savvy tools to add to your disaster prep kit.

Build your plan, show it off on social media using #AllstatePrepSweepstakes

Here’s how the sweepstakes works. Starting today through January 10, 2017, post a photo, video, graphic or text message showing how you’ve prepared for severe weather or a possible disaster. Maybe you’ve turned a plastic tub into an emergency kit packed with supplies. Maybe you’ve practiced an evacuation plan to get out of the house and to a safe place. Maybe you’ve put together an inventory list of your belongings in a creative way. Follow us @Allstate on Twitter at https://twitter.com/allstate. Then post a Tweet using the hashtag #AllstatePrepSweepstakes that shows how you are prepared for potential bad weather in your area.

Your entry will be enrolled in a random drawing for a chance to win. There is one (1) Grand Prize available with the approximate value of $485 and two (2) First Prizes available with the approximate value of $190 each. The Sweepstakes is open to legal residents of the 50 United States, age 18 or older at the time of entry. Void wherever prohibited by law. See official #AllstatePrepSweepstakes rules at http://www.allstatenewsroom.com/news/the-allstateprepsweepstakes-promotion-official-rules/.

Disaster Prep Steps for Families

Here are some ideas to help get you started on your own disaster preparedness plan:

  • Pack An Emergency Kit! Get a plastic tub and fill it with first-aid supplies, personal hygiene items, water, non-perishable food and a flashlight. If you’re on medication, include it or a prescription, along with cash, copies of important papers and insurance policy numbers. Get a list of recommended supplies here. Having the kit ready allows you to grab it and go at a moment’s notice.
  • Protect Your Stuff with Allstate’s Digital Locker App! Take inventory of your belongings by walking through your home with your phone, taking pictures and uploading them to Allstate’s Digital Locker. The app is free and you don’t have to be an Allstate customer to use it. You can download Allstate Digital Locker from Apple or Google Play. If you’re a small business owner, consider using Allstate’s free Commercial Locker app.
  • Practice an Evacuation Plan! Know your local evacuation routes and practice an escape plan with the entire family. Think of it as a school fire drill. Imagine if local authorities or law enforcement officers say it’s time to leave. How quickly can you gather your family and get out? Download a plan at ready.gov to help get you started.
