Advocacy on the Hill: Albany Allstate Agency Owner Travels to Nation’s Capital to Meet with Members of Congress

Drone technology, flood insurance among key topics discussed during grassroots effort

ALBANY, N.Y. (July 5, 2016) – Local Allstate Albany agency owner Tim Berryhill, joined fellow agency owners and employees from across the country in travelling to Washington, D.C. as part of an effort to help to educate lawmakers about issues affecting the insurance industry, consumers and small businesses. Participants met with elected officials representing their communities to highlight Allstate’s public policy priorities.

“As a small business owner with offices in Albany and Hudson, I see first-hand how decisions in Washington affect each of my communities and the people I serve,” said Tim Berryhill. “I was thrilled and honored to be able to share my perspective with the delegation from my state, including staff from the offices of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator Chuck Schumer, Chris Gibson, and representative Sean Maloney, and represent more than 12,000 Allstate agency owners and 41,000 employees serving the insurance needs of their local communities.”

During the meetings, agency owners and employees discussed commercial drone usage and how it could improve worker safety, post-catastrophe response, and overall customer experience in the claims process. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently released rules to govern commercial drone operations. Congress is also examining the issue and is looking to include commercial drone standards in legislation authorizing the FAA.

The advocates also spoke to lawmakers about Allstate’s advocacy for legislation to reform the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) ahead of its reauthorization. Those reforms would include long-term reauthorization, a simplified underwriting and rating process, and improvements to customer experience and policy availability. Additionally, participants discussed existing law regarding design patents on auto repair parts. Allstate urges Congress to reduce the design patent window from 14½ years to 30 months in an effort to provide less expensive repair options more quickly to consumers.
