Your homeowners insurance doesn’t stop at your property line

Whether you're heading out of town for a long weekend or a month-long vacation, there are some things you just can't leave at home. Digital cameras, mp3 players and laptop computers are just some of the many things road trippers are taking along to pass the time and preserve memories.
But with travel sometimes comes uncertainty. Is your laptop safe in your cabin? What if a fire damages your hotel room while you're at the beach? Chances are your insurance is covering you just as it would be if you spent the weekend at home.
Your homeowners (or renters) insurance policy extends to all your possessions (up to your policy limits), no matter where they are. If a burglar steals your laptop or a fire destroys your luggage, you're covered no matter where in the world you might be.
"It's not just the high-dollar items that are being protected either," said Mike Maves, Bernalillo Allstate agency owner. "If your luggage is stolen from your room and you have to purchase new clothes to get you through your trip, your homeowners policy may cover the value of the clothes that were taken, as well."
Maves suggests taking an inventory of the items you take with you to ease the claims process should you need to use it.
And your coverage goes beyond your possessions. The liability portion of your policy extends beyond your property line as well. If you unintentionally injure someone and are found to be legally at fault, your homeowners policy will, in most cases, cover you.
Just like at home, though, there are limits and exclusions to your protection on the road, so read your policy carefully. Or before you set off, talk with your insurance agent about what you need to do if something spoils your vacation.
