08/08/2012 - SACRAMENTO

The Financial Service Roundtable and Allstate Insurance Company are pleased to announce that George Washington Carver School of Arts and Science senior Alex Volkov of Rancho Cordova has been awarded a $5,000 academic scholarship to California State University-Sacramento, recognizing his accomplishments in financial literacy. Volkov joined representatives from Allstate in Rancho Cordova today for award ceremonies to announce this achievement.

"Regardless of academic interest, financial literacy plays a key role in every student's pursuit of lifelong learning," said Phil Telgenhoff, Field Vice President of Allstate Insurance Company in California, at today's ceremony. "Applying sound financial knowledge to important decisions throughout life helps to reduce risk and build a solid foundation for the future."

A native of Latvia, Volkov expects to major in Criminal Justice and Forensic Science at Sacramento State. He was recommended for this scholarship by Carver Principal Allegra Allesandri.

The Financial Services Roundtable established a college scholarship in 2011 to honor students across the nation who successfully completed a certified financial education course, or a financial literacy course offered by a Roundtable member company or a Roundtable community service Partner, before entering college.

The Roundtable Financial Literacy Scholarship Review Committee selected 17 U.S. high school students based on the qualifications and criteria for the scholarship, some of which are listed here:

Criteria
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:

- Have completed a certified financial education course or a financial literacy course offered by a Roundtable member company or community service partner
- Be a graduating senior entering a college, university or trade school
- Exhibit academic success, respectable character, and financial need
- Meet or exceed a 3.0 high school GPA
- Receive character reference from a teacher or member of the community
