Allstate Provides Safe Driving Reminders for Cell Phone Users

July is National Cell Phone Courtesy Month

Most drivers will agree that driving while talking on a cell phone is unsafe. However, countless Americans practice unsafe driving habits every day while chatting away on their cell phones. July is National Cell Phone Courtesy Month; and Allstate would like to remind the driving public of the dangers related to driving while using a cell phone.

"If you talk on a cell phone while driving, you may be putting yourself and other drivers at risk", said Mark Muse, exclusive agent for Allstate Insurance in Edmond. "About a quarter of all car crashes are caused by driver distractions. If you are trying to operate a phone while driving, you are not giving the road in front of you your full attention."

A recent survey conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety found that majority of drivers, 66 percent, answer calls while on trips, while early research from Consumer Reports showed drivers talking on any phone – handheld or hands free - may wander in a lane or slow down unexpectedly. Drivers may also have a hard time recalling signs they see while driving and talking on a phone.

To help drivers make courteous and safe choices behind the wheel, Allstate provides the following tips for driving and cell phones:

  • Make safety the number one priority while driving. Give driving your full attention. Make an effort to minimize distractions and stay focused on the road.
  • Avoid using a hand-held cell phone while driving. Answer calls when safe to do so. Your cell phone service should include a voice messaging system so you can avoid taking calls when driving. Hand-held cell phones should only be used when safely stopped or parked.
  • Don't take notes while driving. Pull off the road to read or write. At 60 mph, you will travel 180 feet blind if you take your eyes off the road for just 2 seconds.
