Allstate To Sponsor John R. Wooden Award

02/17/2004 - NORTHBROOK, Ill.

Building upon the success of its advertising presence during the 2003 college basketball season, Allstate Insurance Company announced today that it will be the presenting sponsor of the 2004 John R. Wooden Award. The award is given annually to the nation’s best men’s college basketball player.

The prestigious award, now in its 28th year, is named for the former University of California at Los Angeles coach who won ten national championships during a legendary career, while also garnering a reputation for high moral standards. Among national basketball honors, the Wooden Award is unique in that it considers both character and academic standards when naming its recipient.

“The sponsorship offers us an opportunity to reach one of our target audiences in an area that they are passionate about. And importantly, it is a respected and highly visible opportunity that aligns with our brand,” said Roberta Borst, director of advertising at Allstate. “John Wooden represents and stands for very high standards, morals and values, and we felt that it is a good fit with the Allstate brand and our current ‘Our Stand’ advertising campaign.”

The Wooden Award is a new marketing step for Allstate, building on an existing relationship with CBS. The Allstate marketing effort will coincide with an exciting part of the college basketball season as consumers ramp up for Men’s Basketball Tournament “March Madness.” The marketing plan includes in-game profiles of the leading award candidates during national CBS telecasts and online and radio spots.

CBS will broadcast the “John R. Wooden Award show presented by Allstate,” for the first time ever on Saturday, April 10, live from The Los Angeles Athletic Club. The All-America team will be announced on March 30, and the ultimate winner will be chosen from that group.

Allstate will present an on-air segment featuring the five-man All-America team during the April 3 telecast of “The Road to The Final Four” on CBS.

Allstate will be prominently featured on CBS’s sports Website, www.sportsline.com, and will co-sponsor the “Bracket Pool Challenge,” where fans can fill out and track the 65-team tournament bracket. Promotions with Westwood One, a national radio network owned by CBS parent company Viacom, will bring further brand exposure.

Previous Wooden Award winners include Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Tim Duncan. Last year’s winner was T.J. Ford from Texas. Prospects for this year’s award can be tracked throughout the season at www.woodenaward.com.
